According to Reuters, the Indian government has approved the closure of a Samsung plant in Tamil Nadu to resolve a dispute between the electronics manufacturer and 500 workers who have been holding a sit-in protest over the suspension of three employees.

The factory, which employs about 1,800 workers and produces refrigerators, televisions, and washing machines, accounts for one-fifth of the South Korean electronics giant's $12 billion sales in India during 2022-23.

This marks the second major labor dispute at the Sriperumbudur facility near Chennai in less than six months, with workers protesting for nine consecutive days. Unions supporting the protest stated that the workers participating in the sit-in will return to work only if Samsung agrees to reinstate the three suspended employees.
